Best Species for Poolside Planting

Canary Island Date Palm: our top recommendation. The high crown means fronds and fruit are elevated above the pool, minimising leaf litter in the water. The architectural silhouette reflects beautifully in pool water. Windmill Palm: compact, tidy and low-litter — excellent for smaller pool gardens.

Species to Avoid Near Pools

Avoid palms with fine leaflets that drop constantly (Cocos palms/Syagrus) or very large fronds (some Livistona species). These create ongoing pool maintenance issues. Avoid any palm with invasive root systems near pool structural elements.

Placement Guidelines

Plant palms at least 2–3m from the pool edge to allow for root development without structural pressure. A pair of matched palms at each end of the pool, or a trio at one corner, creates maximum impact. Avoid planting directly east of the pool (morning shade) — position palms to the south or west.

The Finished Look

Complement poolside palms with smooth rendered coping, Travertine or Bluestone paving, and low tropical groundcovers. Uplighting the palm trunks at night creates a dramatic resort effect that makes your outdoor living space feel special year-round.
