Canary Island Date Palms are long-lived, low-maintenance trees — but a few key practices ensure they look their best and stay healthy for decades. This guide covers everything you need from planting day onwards.

Planting

Plant in full sun with excellent drainage. Dig a hole 2x the width of the root ball and the same depth. Mix backfill with composted organic matter. Plant at the same depth the palm was growing — never deeper. Water deeply immediately after planting.

Watering Schedule

First 3 months: water 3x per week (deep watering). Months 3–12: taper to 2x per week. After 12 months: water deeply once per week in dry summer periods. Established palms (2+ years) are drought-tolerant but benefit from occasional deep watering in summer.

Fertilising

Apply slow-release palm fertiliser in September and February. Products with 8-2-12 NPK ratio plus micronutrients (particularly magnesium and manganese) are ideal. Avoid lawn fertilisers — high nitrogen pushes weak growth and depletes manganese.

Trimming

Trim once per year in late summer/early autumn. Remove only fully dead (entirely brown) fronds. Cut flush with the trunk. Never remove green fronds — this stresses the palm and can lead to disease entry. Leave the trunk clean — no stubs.

Seasonal Tips

Spring: fertilise and check for frizzletop (new fronds emerging small and distorted — treat with manganese sulphate). Summer: water deeply. Autumn: trim dead fronds. Winter: no fertiliser; palms are dormant in cold weather.
